how to use shutters

Using shutters in your home as a decorating feature is quite trendy at the moment.
Here in Australia, genuine old shutters are few and far between, however old louvre doors that were a popular choice for wardrobes and cupboards in the 70's and 80's are pretty easy to find.
Here are a few examples of how I like to use them.

This pair I picked up at a garage sale a few years back,
but had no idea what I was going to do with them, I just knew that I had to have them.
Upon arriving home with them, I was inspired to put them on the back of my house with the inside of an old screen door in between.
I think it adds a bit of a French cafe feel to my house.

On the other side of the back door I added these shutters to a window to balance it out and make an ugly window a little more attractive.

This one I used as part of a display in my living room.
Shutters lend themselves quite easily to hanging things off them.

This one is on my veranda and helps creates a pretty vignette.

Here it is with a more recent coat of a very pale aqua and dressed up for Christmas.

I use these aqua ones at the markets to hang my pictures and things on.

These are the rustic shutters I created for Heart & Soul Cafe.
I have two more of these ready to paint in your choice of colour.

These very solid shutters have been left if their original red and with the brass handles still attached.
We have hinged them together for ease of display but they can easily be separated.
They would make a great divider or bedhead, or put them either side of a window or door.
I have some more shutters in my shed waiting to be redeemed, let me low if you are after something in particular and I will see what I can find.

spring posy drawers and bench seat

I no sooner finished this little bench and it sold.

Photo: Picked this cute little set of drawers up just before Christmas and knew they would make the perfect little ottoman, for the end of a bed or for an entry just right to sit on and put on your shoes that are stored in the drawers. My dilemma is what fabric and what colour? Too many choices!
Here is a before,
sorry it is not the best, I lost a lot of photos in a computer crash and I took this with my phone.
I picked it up at an op shop one day and immediately knew that it would be perfect with a seat on top.

I imagined it as shoe storage with a little seat on top to sit on and put your shoes on.
Originally I was going to do it in neutrals, thinking it would be for an entry,
but instead I decided to go for a lovely green with pink floral, thinking it would be perfect for a little girl's room.

I painted it with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Lucketts Green, then distressed it lightly and finished it with hemp oil.
I kept the original handles, in fact I had to paint around them because they were impossible to remove!
I finished the drawers in white.
I was going to make some matching cushions but it sold too quickly for that!
This piece sold very quickly on my Facebook page and has gone to it's new home.

child's desk with hutch

This desk was my 11 year olds and when we replaced it with a bigger one he decided that he would like to have a go at redeeming it himself.
We have supervised him and helped him along the way, so that it is still a quality piece.

Here is what it looked like when we first got it several years ago.

He repainted the top shelves of the hutch in a charcoal grey and freshened up the white on the sides.

The desktop itself had to be completely replaced as it had been damaged prior to us.
We took this opportunity to finish it in chalkboard paint.
This desk would be great for any child as a homework desk or as it was for my little boy as a craft desk.
The shelves provide great storage possibilities.

Dimensions: 83cm wide, desktop height 58cm, deep 52cm, total height 1.22m
For Sale: $60.
